New owners renovate the championship Joe Lee-designed course by modernizing and enhancing turf, bunkers and greens
The Seagate Country Club unveiled a multi-million dollar renovation of its 18-hole championship private golf course on November 20, 2013.
“The Hamlet Golf Club was purchased and renamed The Seagate Country Club in November 2012 and was then fully renovated to create a world class golf facility to complement to the award winning Seagate Hotel & Spa and Seagate Beach Club,” stated E. Anthony Wilson, Seagate Hospitality Group CEO.
As the original home of the first Golf Digest School, the renovation preserved the original Joe Lee-designed course while enhancing the course with advanced state-of-the-art grasses and technology that were not in existence when Joe Lee originally designed the course in 1973.
Gene Bates, Golf Course Architect, and Jeff Sluman, PGA Champions Tour player and current club member, were instrumental in providing direction on course enhancements to ensure the course met PGA standards and maintained the original Joe Lee course design. Jesse Riddle, Course Superintendent, was additionally instrumental in bringing Bates’ and Sluman’s re-design to fruition.
Chief enhancements to the course include the selection of Celebration Grass for the fairways, and TIF Eagle Grass for the greens. Additional improvements include re-designing new cart paths with synthetic stone and crushed seashells; adding yardage to select holes and improving women’s tees; enhancing bunkers with G-Angle sand; and introducing new hi-tech “Precedent i2” GPS golf carts from Club Car® that are equipped with Visage Mobile Golf Information System, increasing the overall golfer experience.
“Joe Lee left a legacy of creating some of the greatest golf courses around the country that were challenging but fair to all golfers’ levels and skills,” said Bates. “I am very proud to have maintained the integrity of an original Joe Lee-designed golf course, while also incorporating enhancements that were not available during his time.”
The Club features an impressive practice facility that offers a fully outfitted driving range with ProV1 golf balls, putting green, short game pitching and bunker areas, as well as an additional staff of PGA professionals who are available year-round for private lessons for members, hotel guests and other golf enthusiasts
The Seagate Country Club has continued its commitment to recruit and retain Top PGA Professionals for its members. Darren Panks, Director of Golf and International PGA Professional, directs the 18-hole course with Head PGA Professional Andy Anderson who has been at the club for over 15 years. PGA Assistant Professional Whitney Young leads the women’s golf.
Craig Harmon, an internationally renowned PGA professional, is the new Director of Instruction and is available for private lessons. Formally the Head Golf Professional at Oakhill Country Club, Harmon was the 51st recipient of PGA Golf Professional of the Year – the premier honor given by the PGA America to a PGA professional. Harmon brings with him a “Family Legacy” of teaching and instructing all facets of the game.
Number 17 is the Seagate Country Club’s signature hole, which is also considered one of the great short Par-3’s in South Florida. The proximity of the green to the lake offers a unique challenge, as there are a variety of hole locations that offer different shot selections. The three bunkers surrounding the green are deep and threatening hazards to be avoided. For a golf hole ranging from 100 to 137 yards, this is a very intimidating yet scenic hole.
The former Hamlet Country Club boasts numerous golfing greats including Jack Nicklaus, Bob Toski, Jim Flick and Peter Kostis; retired baseball legends’ Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford; Hall of Fame pro golfers Beth Daniels, Jane Blalock, Sally Little and Hollis Stacey. PGA Tour player David Hearn and Champions Tour players Jeff Sluman and Bernhard Langer are current members as well as “hockey legend” Mario Lemieux.
