April 8, 2019 (Delray Beach, FL) – Local Delray Beach resident and Seagate Country Club member Trevor Sluman earned his first PGA TOUR Series-China win after being declared champion of the 2019 Sanya Championship tournament on Sunday. Sponsored by The Seagate Country Club and Callaway Golf Clubs, Sluman shot a third-round, 6-under 66 Saturday taking the lead on the on the par-72 course.
After a 5-under 31 on his back nine Saturday, Sluman moved to a combined 11-under on that side for the week, compared to 7-under on the opening nine. In his 15 career PGA TOUR Series-China starts, Sluman has five top-10 finishes, including his tie for fifth last week at the Chongqing Championship.
Sluman’s win came following the death of Malaysia’s Arie Irawan, who passed away at the time of the championship. Out of respect of Irawan and his family, officials canceled the final round of the tour, reducing the tournament to a 54-hole event. Sluman’s two-shot lead qualified him as champion.
“My heart goes out to Arie’s family and his beautiful wife, Marina,” said Sluman. “Along with the rest of the Tour, we are thinking about them at this time. It’s very bittersweet today, and I think the rest of the year will be dedicated to Arie and the impact he had on this Tour.”
Following his move from his hometown of Rochester, NY – where Sluman spent his childhood learning golf from family and friends, including his uncle and longtime PGA Tour member, Jeff Sluman – Sluman relocated to Delray Beach where he has since been honing his golf skills at The Seagate Country Club.
